Choosing the Right AAC App or Device
A framework for comparing AAC options by access method, vocabulary, platform, and budget — without getting lost in marketing.

There is no single best AAC system — only the best fit for a particular person, right now. Use this framework to compare options on what actually matters, and revisit it as needs change.
Match the access method to the body
Start here, because it rules options in or out. Can the person reliably touch a screen? If so, almost any tablet app is on the table. If touch is inconsistent, look at eye-gaze devices (Tobii Dynavox I-Series and TD Pilot), switch scanning, or head tracking. The access method drives the hardware decision more than any feature list.
Match the vocabulary to the language level
- Emerging communicators benefit from robust symbol vocabularies that are organized for growth: LAMP Words for Life and Unity (PRC-Saltillo), Super Core (Smartbox), Crescendo in Proloquo2Go (AssistiveWare), and Core First in TD Snap (Tobii Dynavox).
- Literate users may prefer text-based systems with word prediction, such as Proloquo4Text, TD Snap Text, or the keyboard modes in most apps.
- Whatever you choose, prioritize core words (small, reusable words like want, go, more, stop) over long lists of nouns.
Decide: dedicated device or app on a tablet?
- A dedicated speech-generating device is rugged, often funded by insurance, locked to communication, and supported by the manufacturer — but costs more and is less flexible.
- An app on a consumer tablet is cheaper and familiar, but you manage updates, durability, and the temptation of games and other apps yourself (tools like Apple’s Guided Access help with that).
Always trial before you commit
Most manufacturers offer free trials or loaner programs, and many apps have a lite version. Trial the system in real settings with the real communication partners. Funding through insurance generally requires an SLP evaluation anyway, which is the right time to compare two or three finalists side by side.
Want a recommendation for a specific situation? Tell the chat about the person’s access method, language level, and budget, and it can talk through the trade-offs.
